Congratulations to the Bantam 2 Jaguars for winning the exciting Holiday House 2011 Tournament over the holiday break hosted by the Arvada Hockey Association. The tournament started out on Monday, December 26th with Bantam 2 earning convincing wins over Arvada 1 (5-2) and Arvada 2 (8-0). On Tuesday, Bantam 2 lost a heartbreaker to the Littleton Hawks (1-3). Bantam 2 completed pool play on Wednesday evening with a hard fought, physically demanding tie with the Arapahoe Stars (3-3).

Bantam 2 found themselves in a three-way tie with the Arapahoe Stars and HHHA Bantam 3 for second place after pool play. After goal differential was unable to settle the tie, Bantam 2 was placed in the championship game by virtue of the second tie-breaker – lowest number of penalties! The Thursday championship game was a rematch of their only loss – against the Littleton Hawks. It was the kind of performance the coaches and parents are so very proud to watch – and coming away with a well deserved 6-2 win.

The tournament performance was a testament to strong, physical, high energy play from the team as it builds towards the playoffs. Congratulations to the very deserving tournament champions!

Bantam B CCYHL Champions

Chicago Presidents Cup

Fueled by Lou Malnati’s Pizza and Portillos’ hotdogs, the Bantam B hooligans, pulled off yet another victory.  Although their faces may tell another story, flying a little over 1,000 miles with only two lines they made their coaches proud.  They fought their way to the championship game with a record of 3-0-1.  Old heroes had become legends a thing of the past. Now a band of brothers take to the ice.

CCYHL CHAMPIONS

What started out as a frantic Easter egg hunt to find enough players for a team, ended in a 15-2-3 season.  This was more than just a “B” team because this team exceeded every expectation.  After playing exactly 49 games in one season, while losing on a handful, this team could no longer be defined by a label.  The theme 212 degrees became the motivation for the team toward the end of the season, and the boys took it to a whole new level.  The first playoff game on March 11th, 2011 vs DU, the game was sent into overtime.  A shot just inside the blue line caught the goalie off guard, which propelled the team to a 5 to 4 victory, and a spot in the second round.  The second game following that Friday was just as exciting to watch after high blood pressure medicine was produced and distributed.  Tying the game to ones with 6.50 left in the third, sent the game to its first round of overtime which was followed by a second.  Finally, the boys had a 2 on 1 break and took it down for the game winner.  D-day had come with lots of anticipation because everyone knew we would have to go up against Arapahoe.  They were team who we had yet to beat, but in the end the score had said it all. 6 to 1.

PeeWee AA Win’s BIG in Vegas!

The PeeWee AA team has had their share of challenges this season. However, they have done well when traveling out of town ... so they once again hit the road and took their talents to Las Vegas for the President’s Day Championship.

The Jaguars came out firing fast and hard in a very competitive game against the host Nevada Storm it was a very fast paced and intense battle. The Jag’s found themselves down 2-1 but would continue to fight never giving up and only increasing the pressure on their opponent. When the ice settled and the buzzer sounded the Jag’s emerged victorious pouring it on late to dominate a very good Nevada team 7-3. Many different players got in on the scoring action contributing either goals or assists in the win.

The following day the Jag’s found themselves matched against a the Jr. Gulls from San Diego…this is a game they would soon rather forget. It was a game where the Jr. Gulls worked hard and effective to get the Jags off their game and it worked. A very disappointing game ended in the Jag’s going down 6-0 … but little did both teams know the stage was set for what would be a rematch.

The final day of pool play would pit the Jag’s against the Bakersfield Dragons ... another very worthy opponent. Both teams fought hard in what would be a battle to move on in the tournament. Though the Jag’s dominated much of the game they were unable to pull ahead and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

The Jag’s now needed some help in order to move on even though they held a few of the tie breakers … and they got it! The stage was set for a Championship game allowing them to avenge their earlier loss to San Diego … and this time it would not be the same! The Jag’s came out hard and fast setting a pace and tone to let the Gulls know they were back and ready to go … the Jag’s scored early but had the goal waved off ... but they were not discouraged as they shortly followed with another goal that this time would stand giving them the early lead. From that point on the Jag’s never looked back, dominating the game play and adding to their lead jumping out to a 3-1 lead over the Gulls. A few penalties helped the team from San Diego apply pressure late and make a push turn the tide eventually closing the gap to 3-2 but it was the Jaguars Day. When the final buzzer sounded Jag’s had won and would be crowned Las Vegas President’s Day Champions! They team collected some nice individual hardware to bring home as well as a great banner to hang in the rink to be viewed by all. They could not have done it without the hard work and encouragement of their coaches and many family members who traveled out to support the team on their successful march. Way to go PeeWee AA … we are all very proud of you!

Hyland Hills Squirt A Jaguar’s, 2011 Colorado Cup Champions!!!

Hyland Hills Squirt A enjoyed a thrilling Colorado Cup Tournament held over the New Year's week-end. After 2 weeks off the ice and only a little pond hockey fun the day after Christmas, the Jaguars came out a little sluggish, suffering a 6-1 loss to the Arapahoe Warriors. In the next game that afternoon they were able to pick it up a little, but still not hitting their groove, they battled the DU Pioneers to a 3-3 tie.

The next day, with hard work and dedication the team found their stride, winning a 5-1 victory over the Colorado Springs Jr. Tigers. Going into the final game that afternoon the team had found themselves in a must win situation to have a shot for the Championship. The team rallied and continued the momentum from the morning game, and with a commitment to defense, posted a 3-0 shutout win over NCYH Jr. Eagles with Breyton Laskey in net.

At the end of the qualifying round, the Jaguars secured a bid for the Championship game, via the head to head tiebreaker over the Eagles. It would be a rematch against the Arapahoe Warriors.

The next morning the team seemed focused, probably a little nervous, but ready for the challenge. The parents were on edge, as after 2 periods of hockey the score was tied at 0-0. It was a game that seemed 1 goal was all it was going to take. It wasn't until 4 minutes left in the 3rd period when the Jaguar's Shana Cote was able to knock in a rebound from Devin Hays for a short handed goal, which would prove to be the game winner. With 20 saves by Andrew Miller and the second consecutive shutout for the team, the Hyland Hills Jaguars won the Championship game 1-0.

Congratulations to the Hyland Hills Squirt A Jaguar's, the 2011 Colorado Cup Champions!!!

Rocky Mountain Lynx U19 win the Light the Lamp Tournament in Rapid City, South Dakota

Our lady Lynx made the trip to Rapid City, South Dakota in the mitts of a New Year's Eve winter storm. The drive that would normally take six hours turned into ten hours, arriving just an hour and half before the first scheduled game against Team Wyoming. It was a hard-fought game with both teams getting many chances. The puck bounced Wyoming's way and at the end of the game it was a 2-0 loss. (37-Becca Halter 20 saves)

A second game was scheduled for 10 pm and was delayed until 10:40 pm against the hometown Rushmore Thunder. The Lynx would be celebrating the New Year on the ice. Toward the end of the last period both teams traded goals like a heavy weight fight. With the score tied 4-4 and 2:15 remaining in the game #6 Ally Werhane scored the go-ahead goal. Rushmore Thunder pulled their goalie with a last ditch effort to tie the game. When Brooke reeled in the puck at center ice and was off to the races burring it making the final score 6-4/ Lynx win!! (17-Brooke Benton 2G) (6-Ally Werhane 2G) (41-Sam Hiller 1G, 2A) (24- Alyssa Wada 1G, 1A) (11-Mackinzie Nicholson 1A) (37-Becca Halter 21 saves)

After getting back to the hotel around 1:30 in the morning the Lynx were asked to step up and play the Thunder again at 10 am. The Lynx found their legs and pulled off a decisive 6-2 win. (17-Brooke Benton 2G, 1A) (21-Jozi Campbell 1G, 1A) (Clare Zupan 1G, 1A) (Sam Hiller 1G) (3-Tori Anderson 1G) (46- Kelsey Abila 1A) (11- Mackinzie Nicholoson 1A) (37- Becca Halter 22 saves, penalty shot save)

The Lynx laced them up again to play Team Wyoming at 2:00 pm and taking 2-1 advantage half way through the game. Only having ten skaters began to show its effect and Team Wyoming’s captain got lose and scored 4 goals. The game ended in a 6-3 loss. (17-Brooke Benton 1G, 1A) (65-Andy Tarver 1G, 1A) (6-Ally Werhane 1G) (11-Mackenzie Nicholson 2A) (37-Beacca Halter 26 saves)

The Lynx qualified for the championship game Sunday morning at 9 am. The border war was realized . . . Colorado vs. Wyoming. The first two periods were hard-fought and the Lynx were down by a score of 2-0. After the ice-make the Lynx rallied for an early third period goal scored by Jozi Campbell. Then Jozi scored a second third period goal to even the game. A five minute overtime was needed and neither team were able to score requiring a shoot out. The Lynx won the coin toss and shot first. Samantha Hiller made the best of the opportunity and scored! Becca Halter stood tall in net and stopped all three shooters, including in a dramatic play stopping Team Wyoming's captain on the last shot. Lynx Win! (21-Jozi Campbell 2G) (18-Clare Zupan 1A) (Becca Halter 16 saves, shoot out win)

PeeWee AA Makes a Strong Showing in North American Winter Championship in Boston, MA

Headed by Coach Dave Lisnik and assistant coaches Darcy Rode and Brent Ness, the Peewee AA team ventured to the East Coast for the North American Winter Championship. The tournament was held at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough, MA. Most families ended up traveling sometime on Christmas Day, but it’s for hockey. . . . Right?

Bringing a Colorado AA team to Massachusetts to play in a AA tournament that included AAA teams seemed a daunting task. None the less Hyland was motivated and had been well prepared by the coaching staff. The first game was a scrimmage Saturday the 26th, Hyland lost in a 8-1 battle. We were all sure that they were probably the weakest team in the tournament and our best chance to win. This was a learning lesson, don’t assume anything!!

We all went back to the hotel in Milford, MA about a 20 minute drive from the rink. We were hit with the news that a Noreaster was here! As we watched the snow fall and the wind blow we wondered if playing the 7:50 am scheduled game would be possible. With a call to the rink it was confirmed that the rink would not close unless it lost power. We figured the snow wouldn’t stick because it was snowing sideways and would end up somewhere west like Ohio.

In the morning we made the trip to the rink, it was a slow go but we made it. The Jaguars were ready to play the AA Minutemen Flames from Marlborough, MA. Hyland brought a good game with physical play. Scoring in bunches, with a solid break out and attention to team defense the Jaguars won 5-0! A second game was scheduled for later that afternoon against the AAA Minutemen Flames. Hyland again was a physical force but came out on the short side losing 1-5. We were all very pleased with the teams play and watching them work together.

Our third game was scheduled for an early Monday morning start at 6:30 am. After using my calculator and all my fingers trying to figure out what time we woke up, in Colorado time, I gave up. Lets just say it was EARLY! The Jaguars played well again focusing on team defense and unselfish play. They out played Assabet Valley scoring a late third period goal and wining 2-1!

The two tournament wins and one loss qualified the Jaguars for the consolation championship against the Rhode Island Hitman. The Jags would be playing for third or fourth. In a closely played game and having some quality scoring chances, Hyland ended up losing 1-2. We are all very proud of the team and their effort!!
